Indoor Camera vs Outdoor Camera: What Fits Your Home

Indoor cameras are built for the rooms you already live in. Think nursery, the pet's favourite corner, the living area, a home office, or a hallway you want eyes on while you're away. They're usually smaller, plug into a wall socket, and most include a physical privacy shutter or software privacy mode so you can switch them off when you're home.

Covering a driveway, side gate, or the backyard is a different job. You want weatherproof gear from our outdoor security cameras instead. For the front step specifically, a video doorbell is usually the better call.

What to Look for in an Indoor Camera

A few decisions matter more indoors than others. Resolution is the first. 1080p is fine for a small room, 2K gives you cleaner faces and detail, and 4K is worth it if you want to digitally zoom into a large open-plan space. After that, think about the lens type, AI detection, audio, night vision and where the camera will actually sit.

A few placement tips. Avoid pointing the lens straight at a window, because glare and IR bounce ruin the picture at night. Skip mirrors for the same reason. Check your Wi-Fi signal actually reaches the spot. Check which Wi-Fi bands the camera supports and make sure the signal reaches the installation point. Many indoor cameras use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, while selected models such as the EZVIZ H7C support dual-band Wi-Fi. 

Local Storage, No Monthly Fees

Local Storage Without a Required Subscription

Many indoor cameras in the Good Buyz range support local recording. Selected EZVIZ models accept a microSD card, with models such as the H1C and H6C G1 4K supporting cards up to 512GB. Storage duration depends on card capacity, video resolution and whether the camera records continuously or only when an event is detected.

The refurbished Eufy IndoorCam Mini also supports local storage, although the required SD card is not included. Eufy HomeBase 3 provides 16GB of built-in storage and can be expanded up to 16TB with a compatible drive, which is sold separately. Camera compatibility should be checked before adding a model to a HomeBase system.

Optional cloud services are available for selected Eufy and EZVIZ products. You can choose local recording without paying for cloud storage, but remote viewing and alerts still use the camera’s internet connection and companion app.

Eufy vs EZVIZ Indoor Cameras

Eufy focuses on the local-storage ecosystem. The IndoorCam Mini is the compact plug-in option,with 2K video, 360-degree pan and tilt, human detection, motion tracking, night vision, 24/7 recording support and a Home Privacy Mode. Eufy HomeBase 3 can provide central local storage for compatible Eufy devices, with 16GB built in and expansion available up to 16TB. Check individual camera compatibility before building a HomeBase system. 

EZVIZ has the broader indoor line-up. Fixed lens (H1C, 1080p) at the entry end, 360° pan-tilt cameras in the C6N and H6C G1 series (available in 2K, 3K and 4K), a dual-lens H7C for panoramic auto-tracking, and the S10 with a 4-inch touchscreen for two-way video calling. Indoor Camera Price Guide

Indoor cameras split roughly into three tiers here.

Entry, around $50 to $80: EZVIZ H1C 1080p, C6N G1 2K, H6C G1 2K and H6C G1 3K. These suit single-room monitoring and first-camera setups.

Mid-range, around $100 to $150: EZVIZ H7C dual-lens 2K+ and H6C G1 4K. These add sharper video, more advanced detection or broader room coverage.

Premium, around $300 and above: EZVIZ S10 with a 4-inch touchscreen, 2K video and video-calling features.

Refurbished stock, when we have it, usually sits a step below the equivalent new tier.

Refurbished Indoor Cameras and Warranty

Refurbished condition and inclusions vary by product. Some units may have cosmetic scratches or markings, and accessories, mounts, cables or original packaging may not always be included. Read the condition and inclusions shown on the individual product page before ordering.

GoodBuyz states that its refurbished products include a 12-month warranty, alongside your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Refurbished stock can offer a useful saving, but check exactly what is supplied and whether any power cables, mounts or storage accessories need to be purchased separately.

Indoor Security Camera FAQs

Do indoor cameras need a subscription? Many models support local recording through a microSD card or compatible Eufy HomeBase, so a cloud subscription is not required. Check whether a storage card, HomeBase or expansion drive needs to be purchased separately. Optional cloud plans are available on selected models. 

Do I need Wi-Fi for an indoor camera? Wi-Fi is required for setup, remote live viewing, app controls and alerts. Local recording may continue during an internet outage on supported models, but remote access will be unavailable. Most cameras use 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, while selected models also support 5GHz. 

Can I record 24/7 on an indoor camera? Selected models support continuous recording. The Eufy IndoorCam Mini is listed with 24/7 recording, while other cameras may offer continuous or motion-triggered recording depending on the model and storage configuration. Check the product specifications before buying. 

Do I need a HomeBase for a Eufy indoor camera? Not always. The plug-in Eufy IndoorCam Mini supports standalone Wi-Fi operation and local storage. HomeBase compatibility varies by camera, so check the specific model before purchasing a hub for central storage. 

Are indoor security cameras legal to use in Australia? Recording your own home is generally fine. Recording other people in private spaces (bathrooms, guest bedrooms, share-house rooms) without their consent is not, and rules on audio recording are stricter than video. This is general information, not legal advice, so check your state's surveillance laws if you're unsure.

What's the difference between 2K and 4K indoor cameras? 2K is sharp enough for most rooms and reads faces well from across a living area. 4K captures roughly four times the pixels, which matters most if you plan to digitally zoom into a large open-plan space or want future-proof detail.

Is a refurbished indoor camera safe to buy? A refurbished camera can offer good value, but check its grade, cosmetic condition, included accessories and warranty before buying.
